At last weekend’s Paper Plains Zine Fest, I realized just how much the people are craving a club. (Like, a social organization. Not a sandwich. But club sandwiches are pretty great, too!) For almost 3 years now, I’ve been facilitating the Kansas City Zine Club, bringing together a bunch of DIY weirdos (posi) to share zines, collaborate, and co-work on the second Tuesday of every month. Ugh, yikes. Here we go again: for the third time this month, I’m sitting down to try and write this blog post. And just like every other time, every failed attempt, I’m ending up here with a major case of writer’s block. The blinking cursor taps like impatient fingers against the WYSIWYG editor box as I delete all the intro sentences I’ve already written. Why is this so hard? Every month, for over a year now, I’ve written a newsletter-style perzine that I share with subscribers, penpals, and friends. Creating each issue has become one of my favorite monthly rituals, and I’ve expanded the practice into creating a monthly minizine, too.

First things first, Zinesommar. Zinesommar!! You know when you and your friends are just shooting the shit and you get an idea and then it grows and grows until it seems like it could never happen? So much has been going on in my zine-y world, and I’ve got a lot to catch y’all up on! First up, today. Today is the summer solstice, midsummer, the longest day of the year… and this year, we’re celebrating zinesommar, too! My friends and I at the KC Zine Collective are hosting a day full of Zinesommar festivities, a way of bringing our local zine community together, raising funds for KC Zine Con (our annual fest), and building the lore around Bernie, our raccoon mascot.
