It’s International Zine Month and I feel fine

First things first, Zinesommar. Zinesommar!! You know when you and your friends are just shooting the shit and you get an idea and then it grows and grows until it seems like it could never happen? But then, through some sort of magic, it does happen, and you pull it off, and it’s really, really beautiful? That’s what Zinesommar was. Whenever KC Zine Collective hosts an event — whether something relatively small like my monthly Zine Club, or our massive annual festival — I always get butterflies in my stomach leading up to the day of. All the “what ifs” nag my brain and I catastrophize. What if nobody shows up? […]

Two b&w zines: Room Tone issue 11 and Gorilla Movies #2

Happy Zinesommar, y’all!

So much has been going on in my zine-y world, and I’ve got a lot to catch y’all up on! First up, today. Today is the summer solstice, midsummer, the longest day of the year… and this year, we’re celebrating zinesommar, too! My friends and I at the KC Zine Collective are hosting a day full of Zinesommar festivities, a way of bringing our local zine community together, raising funds for KC Zine Con (our annual fest), and building the lore around Bernie, our raccoon mascot. I’m teaching a perzine workshop (and other zine-y news)

Local folks: this March, I’m teaching TELL YOUR OWN STORY: a free, four-part workshop series and the first session starts this Wednesday! Join me for an interactive writing workshop celebrating perzines: handmade magazines featuring personal memoir writing.

A zine fest: in a skatepark, the room is filled with tables from wall to wall where people wearing masks look at zines.

That isn’t too unusual, as from time to time someone will search “zines in Kansas City” or see a post on the library’s instagram and turn up for a meeting or two…

The Paper Plains Zine Fest 2023 program

Paper Plains Zine Fest 2023

Summer 2023 was bookended by zine fests. It began with KC Zine Con #8 on the first Saturday in June, and then over labor day weekend, I celebrated summer’s end at Paper Plains Zine Fest just across the stateline in Lawrence, KS. This was only Paper Plains’ second year, but you wouldn’t know it — this fest is run like a well-oiled machine and I had a top notch tabling experience. As a fest organizer myself, it takes a lot to impress me, and Paper Plains did just that. The organizers were super communicative and helpful, the tables were thoughtfully-arranged with ample room for browsing, the vibes were impeccable, and (as […]
