I’m teaching a perzine workshop (and other zine-y news)

Local folks: this March, I’m teaching TELL YOUR OWN STORY: a free, four-part workshop series and the first session starts this Wednesday! Join me for an interactive writing workshop celebrating perzines: handmade magazines featuring personal memoir writing.

A zine fest: in a skatepark, the room is filled with tables from wall to wall where people wearing masks look at zines.

messages and miracles from the grave

A funny thing happened at Zine Club on Tuesday. I was sitting in the library, chatting with Chez and Heather, when two new folks showed up with a shoebox chock-full of zines to share. That isn’t too unusual, as from time to time someone will search “zines in Kansas City” or see a post on the library’s instagram and turn up for a meeting or two…

Paper Plains Zine Fest 2023

Summer 2023 was bookended by zine fests. It began with KC Zine Con #8 on the first Saturday in June, and then over labor day weekend, I celebrated summer’s end at Paper Plains Zine Fest just across the stateline in Lawrence, KS. This was only Paper Plains’ second year, but you wouldn’t know it — this fest is run like a well-oiled machine and I had a top notch tabling experience. Dispatches from KC Zine Con #8

Time flies. I can’t believe it has been just over a month since I tabled KC Zine Con #8 on June 3rd. It feels like it happened last weekend, and I’m still riding that good, good zine fest high, all inspiration and motivation. Time fucking flies. I can barely begin to comprehend that I’ve been involved with this event in some form or fashion for close to a decade now: I tabled the first-annual KC Zine Con at the Uptown Theatre in 2015 and the second iteration a year later on the UMKC campus. Then, in 2016, I volunteered to help plan the event, organizing and tabling each year until KC […]

Workshops

Zine Workshops

Zine workshops, classes, or panels are a great way to build community, unleash creativity, and spark inspiration. I’d love the opportunity to teach your students, friends, neighbors, members, etc. about writing and crafting zines! During a catmothcrow workshop, I help students discover their voice as they work to create their very own zines. My accessible and dynamic lesson plans, tutorials, and workbooks can be customized to fit a bevy of topics; past workshops have touched on everything from social justice to classical music to healing through writing. (Got an idea for a zine-centric workshop, class, or panel? Let’s talk about it!) I can even host virtual workshops over Zoom, an accessible, […]
