So much has been going on in my zine-y world, and I’ve got a lot to catch y’all up on! First up, today. Today is the summer solstice, midsummer, the longest day of the year… and this year, we’re celebrating zinesommar, too! My friends and I at the KC Zine Collective are hosting a day full of Zinesommar festivities, a way of bringing our local zine community together, raising funds for KC Zine Con (our annual fest), and building the lore around Bernie, our raccoon mascot. January feels, simultaneously, like the beginning of the year… and a moment of reflection and contemplation before the year’s true start come spring… and part of an endless continuum that stretches on and on. I’m trying to cultivate the feeling that this image of rabbits that I found on tumblr gives me: a silk-soft, cozy warmth, a sleep ripe for dreaming. Hibernation. Like many zinesters, I’m a journaler. A daily diarist, note-taker, recorder, and doodler. If I don’t write something down I tend to forget it, and while I rarely re-read my diaries, there’s just something about the act of writing that helps the memories gel. Which is all just to say that I’ve got a pretty sizeable collection of journals that I work out of.
