So much has been going on in my zine-y world, and I’ve got a lot to catch y’all up on! First up, today. Today is the summer solstice, midsummer, the longest day of the year… and this year, we’re celebrating zinesommar, too! My friends and I at the KC Zine Collective are hosting a day full of Zinesommar festivities, a way of bringing our local zine community together, raising funds for KC Zine Con (our annual fest), and building the lore around Bernie, our raccoon mascot. I realized that I made more zines in 2025 than any year prior, and that proliferation led to a few revelations about my “process”. Here is what making zines in 2025 taught me about my own art-practice.

I’m launching a printed newsletter, and the first issue is all about embracing snail energy. Why? Well, it took me over a year to finally put the plan of writing a newsletter into action, so embracing the steady, slow pace of my favorite shelled creature felt fitting. I’m absolutely stoked on how issue one turned out, and I don’t think I would be able to say that if I had blustered my way through making this happen back when I had the idea many months ago.
