two images overlaid: one is the very edge of a screenshot— a photo of a computer screen— fading into a firey, neony red. the other is a pastel sky mottled with clouds and a dead tree with a single clump of leaves held in its branches. thanks to the emulsion from the film, the tree looks hot pink, magenta.

musing without thesis

It occurred to me the other day that one of the reasons that I don’t blog more is because I lack essay-ful things to say. I am pondering without a thesis. Most of the blogs I read now are Substack newsletters, and most of those newsletters have clear, explicit thoughts: they are articles, written with clear purpose to instruct or explain a concept, often times commenting on the current sociopolitical landscape and our in/ability, as people of conscience, to deal with the horrors of latestage capitalism.

favorite things: january 2025

Rabbit, rabbit and welcome to February. 💌 Today is Imbolc and tomorrow is forecasted to be in the 60°s ’round these parts, which has me excited about spring even though it is currently cold and windy, muddy and icy, and the crows are waltzing across grey, cloudy skies. I can’t expect February to be any other way, it is what it is… But! Brighter days are coming soon, I can just feel it! (And tomorrow’s promise of a 60° day has me giddy!)

January into February, into…

Dang, has it really been 4 months since I last posted on the blog? Sometimes life gets away from me and it’s hard to sit down here and just type away. When 2024 began, I told myself that I wanted to write at least one blog post a month, recapping all of the zine-y things that I’ve been up to. But every time that I scribble “write a blog” on my to-do list, the actual writing feels like it gets father and farther away. I plan, I procrastinate, I feel bad about myself, so I make a plan again to do the thing… but often, the cycle just starts again. Plan, […]

Spring Flowers and the Bugs that Love Them

This year, spring felt like a gift. Plants seemed to be growing larger than usual, verdant and lush. My lawn was bedazzled with bright pops of color from all the blossoming flowers. Birdsong tolled day and night, joyful and loud. At the end of May, I wrote on my Instagram: “everything is in bloom: peonies, roses, columbine, sage, dandelions, henbit, clover. We went for a walk at dusk last night and the air was perfumed with the scent of irises. The worlds a mess, but at least there is this spring, opulent with flowers.” At first I wondered if spring had always been this beautiful. Was I just getting to appreciate […]

My Garden in May 2020

Step into my garden, baby! ♬♪ Welcome to my 2020 Garden, in all its messy, rambling and unexpected glory. Truth be told, I didn’t think I would get to garden at all this year. Zine Con planning really ramps up during the summer, and I knew that putting together this year’s festival would be especially taxing: we need to find a new home for the event on a shoestring budget, which not only means scouting venues, but also drafting brand new table maps and seeking out additional sponsors to help cover venue costs. Keeping plants hearty and healthy through it all seemed like just one more commitment to add to an […]
