Zine Reviews

reading zines & telling you about them

Since September 2019, I’ve been the curator of @zinereviews, an Instagram page dedicated to — you guessed it – reviewing zines. I’ve since branched into making video reviews on my Youtube channel. Do you publish a zine you think I should read? I’m happy to check your zines out and consider them for a review; submission guidelines are at the bottom of this page.

You can browse recent reviews here, or go and subscribe to my channel or give the Instagram page a follow to pump each new review straight into your algorithm (don’t forget to like and comment!)

Submission Guidelines:

BIG NEWS: As of 8/13/24, my submission guidelines have changed, and I won’t be able to offer written reviews on every zine I am sent. If your zine is postmarked before 8/13, I guarantee that I will be writing a review of your zine on the instagram page. However, if your zine is postmarked after 8/13, the new submission guidelines (below) will apply.

+ I consider zines to be handmade, non-commercial, diy publications, typically printed on a copy machine (but not always!), and then folded and bound/stapled/sewn by hand. Although similar, they aren’t books, magazines, or pamphlets.
+ I don’t review e-zines, blogs, .pdfs, or scans of zines. I want to touch your zines, hold them in my hands, turn actual pages.
    + I don’t review pornographic zines; sorry!
+ I also don’t review books on the ‘gram. If your work has an ISBN (a number assigned to books by a government agency for commercial use), or is a perfect-bound paperback book, I won’t be able to review it.
+ To that end, I am also unable to accept submissions of zine anthologies (books containing scans of many zines.)
+ If you created any part of your zine using Midjourney, DALL-E, Chat GPT or another generative AI, I’m not going to review it. Please don’t send me zines featuring AI-generated work.
+ If you send me a zine promoting hate speech, discrimination, or fascist ideologies, it’s going in the trash.
+ All of the zine submissions that I receive will be opened on camera as part of my First Impressions Zine Review series. From perfectly-scrappy cut-n-paste layouts, to unexpected typeface choices and interesting paper stocks, zines are an innately visual medium, and I love how using video allows me to take viewers inside the pages and show off what makes each zine special. In addition, select zine submissions will receive written reviews posted here at catmothcrow.com, and on the @zinereviews instagram page.
+ I can’t make promises as to when your zine will be featured in the First Impressions series; it all depends on how much zine mail I receive, as well as how much free time I have to dedicate to my zine-y pastimes. @zinereviews is just a hobby of mine amongst many others hobbies, and I dedicate as much time to it as I am able to, while still keeping it fun.
+ Let me know how I should credit you: include a note with your Instagram handle, website, and (if applicable) your email or P.O. Box address if you’d like me to share that you’re open to trading zines. If your zine is for sale, let me know how much it costs and where I can tell folks to buy it.
+ If your zine is text-heavy and in a language I cannot read, I might pass it along to someone else and ask them to review it. (I’m a native English speaker, and I’m currently learning French.)
+ Unfortunately, I can’t return submissions… Most submissions will be donated to a zine library. However, if I am unable to review your self-published work, I will try and return it to you (unless it’s full of hate speech or AI content. Then, as I mentioned above, it’s going straight into the trash.)

To submit a zine for consideration, please send it to:

    Dayna M.
    P.O. Box 413195
    Kansas City, MO 64141 USA

PS: If you are sending your zines in a rigid, cardboard envelope that is 8.5″ x 11″ or larger, please send me an when you drop your zines in the mail (esp. if the post office gives you tracking info!) I’ve had some issues with my post office returning zines that are in cardboard envelopes larger than my P.O. Box. — I’m hoping that by keeping a close eye on tracking, I can prevent any more zines from being returned. Thank you!
