the zine 'Sorcieres'

“Sorcières” by @noamcolothes is different than many of the other witchy zines I’ve encountered. While most of the witchy zines I’ve read (and written!) center around the zinester’s personal magical practice or offer up spells and correspondences, “Sorcières” focuses more on the history and cultural context of witchcraft as a feminist archetype. Part one covers how the witch was created as a cultural scapegoat and how it was used as a way to disenfranchise folks such as mid-wifes, widows, or outcasts. Part two explores how the archetype of witch became a feminist role model, and ways witches show up today in pop culture, like Willow on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. The zine is hand-written in Noam’s loopy handwriting, and each zine has a bold, black-and-white centerfold poster (part 1 of a sleepy witch reading in bed, part 2 of a powerful witch casting a starry spell). Another rad thing about this zine? “Sorcières” is bilingual – Noam has published it in both French and English!

Merci Noam d’avoir partagé ton zine avec moi! Je l’adore!
