Happy International Zine Month 2023

Happy International Zine Month 2023! ✂️🖊 IZM was inaugurated in 2009 by the one-and-only Alex Wrekk of “Stolen Sharpie Revolution” fame. Aside from encouraging folks to read and make lotsa zines in July, the month-long celebration features a prompt list full of ideas for zinecentric activities. 2023’s list was designed by @zineville, and I’ll be posting weekly recaps of how I fulfilled each prompt here on the blog. Day One‘s prompt is to define “zine” — I’ve always said that “zines are handmade, diy publications, typically printed on a copy machine, then folded and bound/stapled by hand.” To expand on that, I think zines are inherently non-commercial, tactile (not digital; I […]

Bread and Roses Farm CSA: Weeks 4 – 6

Man, oh man, did I eat well in May thanks to Bread and Roses. Here’s a recap of veggie hauls from weeks 4, 5, and 6. (Confused what this post is about? Click thru, start here!) My week four share contained peas, a bouquet of root veg (turnips, beets, and carrots!), and a big ol’ bag of salad greens. Later that week, T and I grilled out with friends, and I used the greens and carrots to craft us a kickass salad. (Not to brag, but I make a mean salad.) I also brought the beet roots to play a part in some perfect veggie kabobs. They were joined by grocery […]

Zine Reviews: May 2023

May was a pretty sweet month. I saw a lot of great bands: Radkey, and the Slackers, and the Blast Monkeys, and True Lions, and Mint Fatigues, among others. The highlight was probably MO Executive Order 44, Multicult, Kal Marks, and Weaponize Chomsky at Farewell — 4 deliciously loud bands, a night quivering with energy, the sort of music that fills you up and leaves you whole. What a show! It was a month of bike adventures and game nights. I took first place at bar trivia (team Nancy Druid FTW), and had some time off from my day job for a little staycation. I worked on a lot of art […]

Bread and Roses Farm CSA: Weeks 1 – 3

Hey, Kansas City! Remember back in 2020, when I signed up to purchase 26 weeks worth of farm-fresh veggies grown by refugee immigrants as part of the New Roots for Refugees Farm Share program? I blogged about that experience with the hope that it would be a useful resource for Kansas Citians interested in supporting local farmers. The veggies were tasty, and despite only blogging thru August 2020, I signed up for a Farm Share again in 2021 and 2022. But this year, I decided to switch it up and subscribe to a different CSA program. Introducing Bread and Roses: a regenerative farm on KC’s eastside. Why make the switch? Well, […]

Zine Reviews: 2023, so far

Okay, so I know it’s a big zinester cliche to start a zine (or in this case a blog) with some variation of an apology, a “sorry for taking so long to get this out into the world”, but here we are. I’ve got a backlog of zines I need to post and write about, and a backlog of zines I’ve already posted on the ‘Gram but needed to share here. So I’m tackling the latter now, and the former with once-weekly reviews, bare minimum. (On the @zinereviews Instagram… the Zine Review blogs will remain monthly roundups.) Maybe if I post that promise here, in public, I will hold myself accountable […]
