Fun-Size Issue 13 of “Hi-Fi Anxiety” is themed all around Rex Manning Day, the fictional holiday from cult-classic flick Empire Records (a personal fav of mine!) And listen, I know that the next Rex Manning Day is 235 days away, but I still wanted to give this awesome zine a shout-out, even if it isn’t quite the appropriate season. As with many issues of H-FA, this is a fanzine with perzine tendencies; side A covers what Rex Manning Day is and Jason’s own Rex Manning moment — recounting a story of when he worked at a music distribution center and Joey McIntyre from New Kids on the Block was brought in to perform for the staff —while side B goes on a deep dive into Daniel Johnston, who’s music is briefly featured in the film. Scattered throughout are fun facts and fan art, and the covers feature Deb pre- and post-buzz cut. And, of course, the zine comes packaged with some pin back buttons and there’s a playlist in the zine’s centerfold… it just wouldn’t be a “Hi-Fi Anxiety” without those extra little treasures!
