“Gal Lore” showed up in my PO Box at just the right time. This gay girl poetry zine by aliasaint was the perfect fit for July’s poetry-themed Zine Club meeting. I shared it with the group as part of our show-n-tell hour and it was a hit with the Club crowd! And it is so easy to see why: this zine is gorgeous, with a classic cut-n-paste look. The poems are collaged amongst skulls, syringes, flowers, maps, and stars; the fractured phrases read like song lyrics, rhythmic, alive with sapphic passion. Stand outs include “Rooftops” (in which our narrator rains love notes upon her crush), “Title Pages” (also involving letters and gifts), and “Beach House” (which finds our narrator caught in memory and features a closing stanza that took my breathe away). But simply summarizing the plot of each poem does them no justice: their shine comes from their tone and rhythm, the play of words on the page. So pick this zine up and fall in love with “Gal Lore” yourself.
